This course seeks to draw a general outlook of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries’ Chilean poetry in order to discover the most significant movements, topics and culture of the so-called country of poets. From Latin American Modernismo to the present, from the works of Gabriela Mistral, Vicente Huidobro, Pablo Neruda, Nicanor Parra to Elvira Hernández, Elicura Chihuailaf or Claudio Bertoni’s most recent texts, diving into Chilean poetry is unveiling the Andean state’s recent history and collective imaginary. Hence, this journey will take us to singular creative experiences that can be studied within the wider frame of Latin American literature, such as visual works, exile, mapuche poetry, ecocriticism or artistic resistance against dictatorships.
Classes will be conducted in Spanish.
