In this class we will look into issues at the interplay between semantics and pragmatics in the derivation of utterance meaning, that is we will discuss how speakers and hearers generate meaning in context. To do so, we will look at key phenomena where context plays a crucial role, with a focus on theories of implicatures and presuppositions. We will look at some experimental data on these issues and discuss their consequences for a theory of contextual meaning.
