This course introduces BA students to Queer Theory (QT). By drawing on pertinent academic queer theoretical texts as well as fictional cultural texts, the students will be invited to become more fluent in framing cultural texts critically with the help of QT. We will gradually add different possible ways of analysis to our reading practices which will simultaneously demonstrate QT’s potential and necessity. The students will be invited to become more aware of what they already bring to reading cultural texts and QT perspectives will then be added to their repertoire. They can look forward to a set of interesting readings, both fictional and academic, and will come out on the other end of this seminar with a sharpened view on how gender, sexuality, and race are intertwined in cultural texts.
