This seminar combines theoretical basics with current research results from empirically oriented democracy studies. We consider the latest research results on classic questions in democracy research. The seminar covers a wide range of research questions, amongst others: How are economic development and democratization related? Are presidential democracies less stable than parliamentary ones? How can we explain the formation of minority governments? Which institutions lead to more satisfied citizens?

This seminar takes place in May and June 2022. Apart from the introductory and final session, we will meet for two sessions per week. Each week will be dedicated to a specific research question. In the first session, we discuss a classic reading in empirical democracy studies. In the second session, we focus on the most recent developments in research and discuss the most recent results on the respective question.
