This course is part of a series which closely looks at a classic of colonial literature, and investigates how it has been transformed in later re-writings. The classic at stake, here, is Joseph Conrad's novel Heart of Darkness, first published in 1899, which we will discuss in detail. We will then turn to a number of very different postcolonial revisions: Chinua Achebe's novel Things Fall Apart, Francis Ford Coppola's film Apocalypse Now, and Wilson Harris's novel Palace of the Peacock. Additinoal texts will be provided online. Postcolonial theory will help us to better understand and place these works.
