This seminar, centered on history, will be devoted to the investigations of the development of the US American imperialism as an outgrowth of American exceptionalism. One of the core aims of the seminar will be the analysis of the vocabulary, structure and (in case of recordings) the intonation of historical documents and speeches that have shaped the present notions of American exceptionalism. Amy Kaplan’s concept of “anarchy of empire” will be invaluable in working with the dichotomy of exceptionalism/imperialism.
