This course focuses on the semantics of pronouns and the variety of pronouns we see across the world's languages. In this course, students will gain familiarity with a range of approaches to the meanings of pronouns. Special attention will be paid to topics related to binding, the semantic contribution of phi-features, and variations in pronominal size. Students will learn to contrast and distinguish between a range of competing approaches to pronominal semantics. We will also focus in greater depth in two case studies of complex pronouns and their meaning contributions: demonstrative pronouns in German, and logophoric and related pronouns in a range of languages.
