This course is an introduction to discourse analysis and offers an overview of a number of central concepts and considerations for the method. The main modes of language production are spoken and written but other, multimodal modes are additionally discussed. Discourse is analysed according to the context it appears, society that takes part and genre it represents. Conversation analysis as a method for systematic research of interaction is another topic of discussion. Furthermore, questions, such as, what is text, how to recognise and analyse it, are addressed from a linguistic research perspective. These topics are introduced in the seminar and serve as starting points for student engagement and conduction of own projects for further studies.
