Our course approaches the museum from a range of critical perspectives, including the representational role of museums in nation-building, their relationship to memory and commemoration, and their social roles and responsibilities. We will also consider recent contests over the rights to collections and the pedagogical representation of 'other' cultures. Students will engage with readings from the fields of museology, cultural studies, memory studies and postcolonial studies and combine these with close examination of current exhibitions as case studies.
