This seminar offers an introduction to the analysis of discourse. The focus is going to be the language of sports and its various areas, such as commentary, trainer speech and athlete/trainer interviews. The basics of discourse analysis are going to be  presented, after which a selection of current studies from spoken and written discourse are discussed. Some of the studies are from (digital) media, such as online platforms and television broadcasting in the cases of commentary, and others from spoken data specifically recorded for the purpose of a linguistic study  of the language in sports, such as interaction between the trainer and athlete. By the end of the seminar, students should be able to understand and appply appropriate discourse analysis methods to analyze samples of spoken and written discourse in the sports realm. They are additionally going to gain practical skills on data collection, preparation, such as transcription, and presentation in the form of an  academic paper.
