This introductory lecture provides an overview on radio astronomy. It starts with the description of electromagnetic waves through Stokes parameters and terms like brightness and intensity. It continues with radio telescopes and antenna arrays, radio wave emission mechanisms like synchrotron radiation and bremsstrahlung, and radio wave propagation in plasmas. Then special topics, like solar radio astronomy, planetary radio emission and galactic and extragalactic sources are discussed.
