From an inclusion perspective, all children of diverse backgrounds have a right to quality education. When children do not have the same access to quality education, there is educational inequity.  In this class we will learn about theories, research, and applied work addressing the challenges and benefits of teaching to diverse classrooms, with an emphasis on cultural diversity. One goal of the class is to provide a theoretical and empirically based foundation for understanding culture, diversity, and equity. Throughout the semester we will discuss two frameworks for understanding diversity: a cultural competence perspective and equity literacy perspective. These two frameworks have different implications to how we think about and address diversity in our teaching and learning.
