Social aspects of city (re)building -methodological seminar
Taking the debates on the construction, reconstruction and restoration in Potsdam and other, primarily German, cities as an example, we will consider the following questions:
1. how does city space influence the organisation of social life?
2. How are decisions about the shape of urban space made?
3. What are the differences between urban and countryside planning?
4. Who owns the city and what can it possible mean?
5. what significance does architecture have for social memory and identity?
6. which expected and unanticipated actors can we encounter in such debates?
7. How to study these processes anthropologically and sociologically?
Students will be asked to conduct a set of research exercises.
Soziale Aspekte des Städte(um)baus - methodologisches Seminar
Am Beispiel der Debatten um Bau, Wiederaufbau und Restaurierung in Potsdam und anderen, vor allem deutschen Städten, werden wir uns mit folgenden Fragen beschäftigen:
1. Wie beeinflusst der Stadtraum die Organisation des sozialen Lebens?
2. Wie werden Entscheidungen über die Gestaltung des städtischen Raums getroffen?
3. Was sind die Unterschiede zwischen Stadt- und Landplanung?
4. Wem gehört die Stadt und was kann das bedeuten?
5. Welche Bedeutung hat die Architektur für das soziale Gedächtnis und die Identität?
6. Welche erwarteten und unerwarteten Akteure können wir in solchen Debatten antreffen?
7. Wie können diese Prozesse anthropologisch und soziologisch untersucht werden?
Die Studenten werden gebeten, eine Reihe von Forschungsübungen durchzuführen.
