In this course, we will investigate the concept of a right and the concept of a person which it defines. We will start by reading some contemporary work on the concept of a right which can be found in the work of Elizabeth Anscombe, and has been developed by Michael Thomspson. After that, we will explore the role which a version of this concept plays, according to Arthur Ripstein, in Kant's Rechtlehre. For the final part of the course, we will look at Marx's and Marxist critiques of the notion of rights, reading some of Evgeny Pashukanis' General Theory of Law. The course will be in English, and is aimed at advanced undergraduates and Master's level students. It will bring together systematic and historical concerns within the philosophy of action, ethics and political philosophy.
