The seminar sheds light on alternative spaces of globalization during the Cold War. The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) provided a political and institutional framework in which economic, military and cultural exchange took place. The seminar focuses on the human agency, or chief protagonists, of such exchanges. Among these were communist technocrats, activists of liberation movements, students, engineers and workers in training programmes, military staff, and others. We will learn and engage in critical discussion about different kinds of cooperation between NAM member states, aimed at sparking knowledge transfer and modernization and, more generally, at unlocking alternative potentials towards development.
