Theory and actual discourses on war. How do we come closer to the reality of war? This course will pursue sociological and cultural strands with many examples and case studies.

This seminar will be held in English even though there will be texts in German. French-speaking students are especially encouraged to participate in this course.

The focus is on ALGERIA 1954-1962

The course will not be a mere historical description of the period of liberation from French colonialism. It will be an introduction into the discursive field on how the narrative of this periode has influenced our thinking - through social sciences (Bourdieu), literature (Camus), poetry (Anne Weber), and other sources. We shall decide early in the semester who will elaborate reports on which sources and how we come together in an elaborate exercise of contemporary adequate forms of discussion.
