Normally linguistics deals with the relation between sound and meaning, but all languages have constructions in which there is a silent gap which is nevertheless interpreted with a meaning on the basis of other elements in the sentence or in the surrounding discourse, subject to rather strict conditions. The course deals with this phenomenon cross-linguistically.
