The Great Famine 1932-33 in Soviet Ukraine is one of most tragic and still less known stories of Stalinism. In our course we will read and analyze various texts, - mostly scholar publications of different perspectives, but also some propaganda materials, documentaries, works of art – to discuss not just the historical event and its context, but also to reflect on the transregional research of man-made famines (China, Korea, Ireland, British India), on the relevance of ‘genocide-debate’ (in Ukrainian and international context), on the spectrum of usages of Holodomor in historical policies and commemorative practices in post-Soviet era.
