The Afriquia Theatre online block seminar will provide an opportunity for students to read / watch and discuss plays and performances that operate at the intersection of blackness and queerness, authored and performed by the playwright, theatre maker and course tutor, Mojisola Adebayo. Plays include Moj of the Antarctic: An African Odyssey, Muhammad Ali and Me, I Stand Corrected, STARS and The Interrogation of Sandra Bland (published by Oberon Books / Bloomsbury Methuen in Adebayo’s Plays One and Plays Two). Themes of climate justice, surviving abuse, foster care, Islamaphobia, racism, homo/transphobia and gender-based violence and the Black Lives Matter movement are all addressed through an Afriquia (Black / queer) lens. Study of the author and tutor’s work will be a springboard from which to develop your own creative writing for the stage, with support from your tutor. This online block seminar will be very interactive and workshop based, with exercises and full participation requested.
