Artists, philosophers, planners, activists from across the globe (and, of course, many individuals who are none of the above) have long been interested in imagining how the world around them could be made a better place. The flip side of this has been a sense of foreboding about the methods through which such “improvements” are to be achieved, or the direction in which prevailing logics and tendencies are already driving the world. This is an introductory course, in which our objectives are two-fold: to familiarize ourselves with some of the theoretical writings on utopia/dystopia, and to explore some of the brave new worlds depicted in modern fiction and films.
